Louisville's Sister Cities are Montpellier (France), Mainz (Germany), Tamale (Ghana), Jiujiang (China), Quito (Ecuador), La Plata (Argentina), Adapazari (Turkey), Leeds (United Kingdom).
What is a Sister City?
A sister city relationship is a broad-based, long-term partnership between two communities in two countries. A partnership is officially recognized when the highest elected official from both communities signs off on the sister cities agreement. A city can have any number of sister cities, and sister city organizations include representatives from nonprofits, to municipal governments, the private sector, and civic organizations.
What do we do with our Sister Cities?
At the World Affairs Council we administer our Sister Cities relationships on behalf of the city government. Under our Sister Cities Committee we focus our projects on three main areas: Leadership, Sports & Culture, and Education partnerships. These are the main areas we focus on any project or potential partnership.
What makes Sister Cities important?
Sister cities promote peace worldwide on multiple levels. From providing students with their first opportunity to travel abroad and experience another culture; to creating valuable professional experiences and building connections between organizations; sister cities strengthen local and global communities and promote world peace while bringing tangible economic and social benefits to participating cities.
